Commonly Asked Questions

Description of Festival

Each spring the Elementary School Band Program has its annual Solo & Ensemble Festival.  This is a wonderful opportunity for all 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year players to prepare a solo piece of music and have it critiqued by a judge.  1st year students are occasionally asked to participate in the festival.  Information about this event will be sent home in the mail and with students at lessons.  Participation is not mandatory but is strongly recommended.

Picking Music for the Festival

The student’s lesson teacher will bring music for the student to pick from after Christmas.  It may be possible for the student to play a piece of music they bring from a favorite music book or other source.  Music is ordered by the student’s teacher and will be delivered to them at their lesson.

The Benefits of Participation

Performing in a festival like this is a wonderful opportunity to have someone else listen to your playing and provide feedback on what is done well and what needs improvement. The same thought is true for large ensembles.  Very often in our individual and group playing we are not able to hear things about our playing that can easily be improved if we had another set of ears to listen to us.  Each soloist and group is rated and will receive an award for his or her performance that day.  Their evaluation and solo will be kept in their portfolio.

This opportunity also helps the students to set a goal and work hard to perform a piece of music they might not have been able to perform just a few short months ago.  It helps students to evaluate their level of playing and also begin to push themselves to new levels of playing in a group and on their individual instrument.  This positive experience will also help students gain more confidence in playing their instruments.  Playing independently of others is a very beneficial experience to young instrumentalists. Soloists will also need to find an accompanist to play with them.  Finding an accompanist and working with them will help develop relational skills needed not only in music but also in life.  Students will also be afforded the opportunity to hear others perform various types of music on many different instruments.
