Career Exploration Day

Purpose of Career Exploration Day:

The purpose of Career Exploration Day is to give the KML junior class an opportunity to explore various careers. Juniors will attend pre-selected career presentations given by people actually in these fields. This will give them a chance to ask them questions about the careers. This day is NOT to entertain them, give them specific college information, or job shadowing possibilities, but it IS intended to give them general information on these careers and perhaps open the possibility of additional career options that you have. We try to get a good balance of careers presented – some hands-on, some computer related, various medical, etc.

Alumni, do you feel that your career would be of interest to the juniors and be a position addition to this mix? If you are willing to be a presenter, please contact Mrs. Karen Bartman, KML Administrative Assistant at 262-677-4051 or kbartman@kmlhs.org.

Location and date:

Career Day is usually scheduled at KMLHS for a Friday in February using both gymnasiums and cafeteria.

Schedule:

An 18-minute presentation given three to four times depending if the number of juniors warrants it.

Suggested presentation outline:

Short introduction of yourself

Name
Graduating class if a KML alum
Background—education, on job experience (how long)

Pose 4-6 questions that focus students on the core of your presentation
Present the career

How can one serve his Lord through this occupation?
Specific requirements
Skills and abilities with which the Lord has blessed you that are required to be successful
Some humorous anecdotes about incidents on the job
Projects, cases, etc., that you have faced during your career
Off shoot careers that might be possible from this career
Type of training necessary
If you won the lottery, why would you continue working at this career even without pay?

The above suggestions for presenting the career don’t have to be presented necessarily in that order and you don’t
have to cover them all. However, we would like to see you focus on the blessings of the career and the challenges that make your career one that you look forward to every day. Try not to make the amount of earnings possible as a main focus. In fact, if possible, don’t even talk about the money.

Wrap up and provide about 3 minutes for questions. Attempt to have a flowing, fast paced presentation that will last about 15 minutes.

Most importantly, as you plan your presentation, try to put yourself in the place of the juniors to whom you will present.
Some of them definitely don’t want to be there. Can you put together a presentation that will grab most of them?
