Course (click to view map):
The course is one large loop located on our school grounds, running around the new athletic fields and our outdoor environmental classroom. The distance will be 2500 meters (1.55 miles) for all of the races. The KML cross country team will run each race with the runners to guide them through the course. There will be time before the races for runners to familiarize themselves with the course. Turns will be marked with flags or cones, and the course will be painted with a white line. Runners should stay within three feet of either side of the painted white line when the line is present.
Number of Runners:
You may enter as many runners as you wish in each division.
Rosters:
Enter your rosters at athletic.net. Final rosters are due on athletic.net by Monday 4:00pm, Oct. 6, 2008. See included sheet for directions on how to do this.
Teams:
Your team will consist of your top 7 finishers. The top four finishers for a team will make up the team score, the next three will be “pushers.” “Pushers” do not count for the team score, but may “push “up another team’s score if any of them beat any of the top four runners of another team. The lowest team score wins the race. Incomplete teams (those with fewer than four runners) will be allowed to compete for individual awards. If a school does not have enough 7th or 8th graders to complete a team (4 runners), a student from 6th grade or under may run in the 7th and 8th race to complete a team.
There will be one team allowed per division per school, with an unlimited number of entries. All runners are eligible for individual awards.
Students from grades lower than 5th grade may compete in the 6th Grade & Under races and be allowed to compete for a school’s team and individual awards. We ask that the school’s representative use good judgment as to whether the young runners can truly endure the rigors of the 2500 meter course.
Scoring:
Scoring will be done just as in a regular cross country meet, with the exception that the top 4 runners for each school will make up the team score. Each finisher will receive a numbered card at the finish line. Coaches should collect these cards from the runners after they finish, write their place next to their name on the envelope provided, put the place cards in the envelope, and turn the completed envelope in to the check-in table. (Please do this ASAP so we can get the scoring done on a timely basis.) The team with the lowest score wins.
Entry Fee:
The entry fee will be $1.00 per runner, with a maximum of $10.00 per school (for 10+ runners). Bring your school’s payment to the meet and pay when you pick up your team packet.
Rain Date:
If there is inclement weather on the 6th, the meet will take place on a day to be determined. Schools will be called ASAP on the 6th if this change occurs.
Parents:
Please encourage parents to come to the meet. Most of the course can be seen from the soccer field area, especially with a pair of binoculars, making this meet a great spectator sport.
Uniforms:
Runners may wear any appropriate clothing for the race, particularly running shoes, shorts and a T-shirt. Gloves, sweats (tops and/or bottoms), racing spikes (not cleats) to 3/8”, headbands, etc. may also be worn. Although not required, it would be a nice show of school spirit if your teams wore school T-shirts (if you have them).
Check-in:
When your team arrives, head to the baseball backstop where the meet HQ will be located. There you will pick up a school packet, containing course maps, envelopes for finish cards for each team you have, a brochure on KML’s cross country program for your runners, and other materials.
Teams can set up camp next to the new shed by the check-in area. We will try to have some water jugs and cups available by the finish line. Teams should bring other drinks and snacks as they see fit. Fruit juices, fruit, granola bars, sport drinks, and cut vegetables are good items to bring to a meet. Runners should not overload on food before a race, however.
Fun Run:
Anyone can run in this race, including teachers, coaches, parents, high school or college students, grade school students (again), church members, etc. It will be run after the 7th-8th grade boys race. Awards for this race are still pending.
**NEW**
Preparation:
Training your school’s participants during gym class would be a good idea. Even if some of your kids feel they can’t run the entire race, encourage them to try the race anyway. Many of the participants walk part of the race, so they won’t be the only ones if they do end up walking.
The KML CC team invites your school to come and try out the course before the meet. The KML coaches and team can give you some pointers on running cross country and help you learn the course. We will also run any schools that come through an optional mock meet, so your runners can get a feel for how the race will go. If you are interested in coming, please email Coach Kuehl (tkuehl at kmlhs dot org) and let him know which day you would like to come on.
On the day of the meet, please make sure that runners are properly stretched before they run their race. Drinking lots of water, as well as eating carbohydrates (pizza, spaghetti) a day or two before the meet would be good for the runners.Meet Results:
We will record all results using a computer program, including individual finish times, places, and team scores. It would be helpful if school advisors would keep track of their own school’s results as well. That way you can let your runners know how well they did (time-wise) right away, rather than waiting for the official results. Times will be called out at the finish line if you do not have a stopwatch. Results for each race will be available after the races as well as on athletic.net and through the links at the top of the page within an hour after the meet.
I am looking forward to a great meet, and hope your school enjoys the entire day!!
