2 semesters Prerequisite:
Algebra Note:
May be taken concurrently with Geometry or higher This
course is designed particularly for the non‑math major (though open to all
students) to develop skills in other areas of mathematics that relate to
practical use in day‑to‑day life and in business.
The course begins with the economics and entrepreneurial units developed
by Junior Achievement, in which students learn to start a business and operate
the business throughout the school year.
Once the business is established, the course will involve the students
proceeding through a simulation of "living on their own," in what is
generally considered "consumer math."
Topics include: review of
basic math and Algebra, spreadsheets, finding a job (applications,
interviews, different payrolls and tax deductions), saving and checking accounts
and budgeting, public transportation vs. leasing/owning a car, finding a place
to live, renting vs. buying a home or condo, paying for utilities and "out-of-pocket"
expenses, comparison shopping, stocks and bonds, applying for and using credit
cards, buying on credit, getting insurance, etc.
