Bells

Purpose - The purpose of this experiment was to discover new ways of establishing sound waves.  With the sand, people are able to see how sound waves affect objects and what kind of waves they project.

Materials:

90-lb Nylon Monofilament Fishing Line             $36.99

5/8” steel straps                                                $6.20

Bow Saw                                                         $30.49

Rosin                                                                $6.99

Sand                                                                $4.99

Msc. Supplies (paper and cardboard)               $5.00

Plywood                                                           $20.00

Procedures:

1.      Make a 2x4 foot rectangle with the plywood.

2.      Take a piece of cardboard or a flat piece of plywood and fit it underneath the frame of the rectangle.

3.      Next, make wooden beams in the middle of the rectangle for support using the plywood.

4.      Attach two metal rods to each supporting beam so that they stick up vertically from the unit.

5.      Attack a round metal disc to one stick and a square metal disc on the other.

6.      String the fishing line along a bow up to the two metal discs

7.      Finally pour sand on each disc

8.      String the bow to make a noise and see the vibrations

Since Bells was already made before our experiment, our group was able to save a lot of money.  We ended up not buying anything for this project since the group and supplies already at home like the sand, cardboard, and plywood.
