Introduction Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

Step 2 - The Lined Cells

Wastewater is pumped about 1000 feet to a distribution box, where it is evenly dispersed into the two lined cells.  The cells are 50 feet wide by 60 feet long and about three feet deep.   After being compacted, the soil is covered with a protective fabric, a thick rubber lining, additional fabric, eighteen inches of washed gravel, a thin covering of straw and four inches of compost-mulch.  Thousands of hydrophilic plants were transplanted into the mulch, and additional wetland prairie seed mix was broadcast.  The water level of the wetland was brought up to the mulch layer as soon as the planting was completed.
