Introduction Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

Step 3 - The Unlined Cell

An unlined cell, 200 feet long by 15 feet wide, receives the wastewater from the two lined cells.  This berm is composed of layers of sand, gravel, compost-mulch, and mesic prairie plants.  These plants develop deeper roots for absorbing the wastewater nutrients that trickle by.  After infiltrating through all of these layers, the water is returned to the soil as groundwater.

A layer of sand is spread as the base of the unlined cell

A berm of sand is formed around the base, it will be filled with gravel

Earth is piled up on either side of the unlined cell to keep the sand
and gravel in place.  A layer of mulch will complete the cell
